Sweet Briar Memorial Chapel

The Sweet Briar Memorial Chapel has not always been a part of the Sweet Briar campus. As I researched online I found a bulletin called, "Dedication of the Sweet Briar Memorial Chapel." According to the bulletin the chapel was dedicated in 1967, or 66 years after the college was founded. I don't know if the chapel originally held church services--I assume it did. However, the chapel is now nondenominational and there are no church services. Many alumni do hold their wedding services here though.

Sculpture in the Chapel

This sculpture is hanging in the Chapel when you first walk in. The plaque next to it says "In Thanksgiving for Nancy Dowd Burton, Class of 1946, Timothy Savage Werrell Artist." As I was trying to research this sculpture I found out that there is a Nancy Dowd Burton Award and it is for alumnae classes. I also found out that Nancy and two others (Gladys Horton and Elizabeth Wood) all worked together to create the Boxwood Circle Giving Society which raises money. I am not sure what the sculpture is supposed to be, and I tried to research it online without much luck. I think it looks like a person holding someone or something, though I am not really sure.

Boathouse

I don't know very much about the history of the boathouse, but I do know that the "Boathouse parties" were originally held there. I also believe that the parties were there up until last year. There is a sign on the boathouse that says, "This lake and boathouse are for the use of Sweet Briar College students, faculty, staff, and their authorized guests only." I would really like to go into the boathouse and see what it looks like on the inside, but I really enjoy taking the time to walk down there because it is a nice, quiet, relaxing place for me.
