These sculptures can be found behind Pannell. I'm not really sure of their meaning, but they are very interesting. If you aren't looking closely you might think the pipe is just a pipe. However, if you take time to look at it you will notice that there is a sculpture of a person inside. The other sculpture is a rock. I'm not sure of its significance, but it's pretty interesting. Did students design these? What did they want us to think when we saw these?

Butterfly Garden
The butterfly garden has always intrigued me. When I first came on a visit to Sweet Briar I saw this on my tour and thought it was awesome! I'm not sure when it was made or when the butterfly's come, but I hope to see when all the butterfly's come. I think it must be beautiful! The garden is located near the train station and while you can't see the shape of the garden standing so near to it, if you go up the hill a little bit you start to see that it forms an X. I can't wait to see the garden when it has all of the butterfly's!

Daisy
This "plaque" is found on your way into the old gym, Williams Gym. I know we had talked a little about it last class, and no one has figured out where it came from. When we went to the archives on Wednesday I noticed that someone had taken a picture of this and stuck it into the Daisy section. I'm really curious as to where is came from. Is it old enough to be from when Indiana was around? Or would it be something that someone relatively recently had made? Every time I go into the gym her eyes seem to follow me, and it's a little bit creepy! I wish we knew more about where it came from, it surprises me that no one knows more.

Sculpture in the Chapel
This sculpture is hanging in the Chapel when you first walk in. The plaque next to it says "In Thanksgiving for Nancy Dowd Burton, Class of 1946, Timothy Savage Werrell Artist." As I was trying to research this sculpture I found out that there is a Nancy Dowd Burton Award and it is for alumnae classes. I also found out that Nancy and two others (Gladys Horton and Elizabeth Wood) all worked together to create the Boxwood Circle Giving Society which raises money. I am not sure what the sculpture is supposed to be, and I tried to research it online without much luck. I think it looks like a person holding someone or something, though I am not really sure.

Plantation Burial Ground
This is one of the slave grave sites on Sweet Briar campus. We had talked about this particular one in class (the one by the small pond). I had never seen or visited it before so I decided that I would go look at it. It's very interesting because if you look at a distance it just looks like a normal field. It would be really cool if we could find some more sites! Where are some other sites?

The Bell Tower
The Bell Tower
I tried to look up the history of the bell tower and haven't had much luck. I walk past the tower everyday, and hear it chime every hour. Has it always been there? When was it built? And who built it? I would like to learn more about its history.Friday, September 13, 2013
